Ometepe Island is a jewel of 276 km2 located in the Great Lake of Nicaragua, Lake Cocibolca. It is the biggest island in a freshwater lake located in the tropics.

It's name is derived from the nahuatl words "ome", which means two and "tepetl" , which means mountain or hill.

Location
BY CAR FROM MANAGUA:
Take the Pan-American Highway south to the city of Rivas' traffic circle (Rivas is 114 km from Managua, and takes about two hours by car). At the traffic circle, turn left toward the port at San Jorge (about a five-minute drive from the traffic circle). Ferries and motorboats leave approximately every hour for Moyogalpa, and the trip takes about an hour. From Moyogalpa, you can take a bus or taxi to the hotel (approximately 45 minutes).
