The Hotel was built in 1989 with the idea of providing visitors with the opportunity of exploring a tropical rain forest in an area of very limited access without causing undue damage to the fragile ecosystem.
The Hotel has an area of 8 hectares and is located on a strip of land about 5 Kms from Tortuguero Village, between the Tortuguero Lagoon and the Penitencia Canal which leads to Barra de Colorado. Of the eight hectares, seven are a protected Natural Reserve created by the Hotel, where you can find monkeys, several species of tropical frogs, sloths, many bird species and a lush and healthy rain forest.
