Braulio Carrillo National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most important protected areas and is named after Dr. Braulio Carrillo, the country’s third president and a national benefactor. Located just 20 kilometers northeast of San José, this vast national park is one of the most accessible yet wild rainforest destinations in the country.
The park is known for its dramatic and rugged landscape, dominated by steep volcanic mountain ranges and deep valleys. This unique geography creates a wide range of microclimates, making it one of the most ecologically diverse areas in Costa Rica.
The vegetation is made up primarily of dense, evergreen tropical rainforest. The forest has a highly complex structure that changes depending on elevation, soil drainage, temperature, cloud cover, and rainfall. Visitors will find untouched primary forest filled with towering trees, tree ferns, heliconias, and a rich variety of palm species. Braulio Carrillo National Park is also famous for its incredible biodiversity. The park is home to a wide range of wildlife, especially bird species, making it a top destination for birdwatching in Costa Rica. Mammals that inhabit the area include howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and white-faced capuchin monkeys, as well as tapirs, jaguars, pumas, pacas, white-tailed deer, porcupines, and sloths.
Although the park covers a vast area of protected rainforest, most visitors experience the southern section near the Siquirres Highway, which connects the Central Valley with the Atlantic Coast. This area offers some of the most scenic rainforest views and is one of the easiest ways to experience Costa Rica’s tropical ecosystem..
