On May 4, 1887, with Mr. Bernardo Soto as President of the Republic, the National Museum was created with the intention to provide the country with a public establishment to deposit, classify, and study natural and artistic products.

On October 31, 1977, the INS opened the Museum under the name “Archaeological Collection of the National Insurance Institute”, then in 1980, changed the name to Jade Museum.

Between 1978 and 1982, in San Jose was built in the permanent collections of the Banco Central de Costa Rica in the underground building in the Plaza de la Cultura. In this way the city had a new space for museums and exhibitions.
