Rain
Forest Reserves
Two
popular natural history day tours head out of the capital early
in the morning, either to the east or west. A short trip to the
east stands the forest draped mountains of Braulio
Carrillo National Park, where you can enjoy spectacular views
and hikes through the forest. It is almost impossible to believe
that a region so near San José could be that wild and well
preserved. Lying in one of the steepest areas of the country, Braulio
Carrillo is mainly constituted by high mountains heavily blanketed
with thick, lively forests, rushing rivers that carve through steep
canyons and a myriad of waterfalls.
Cost: $87.00 (including round
trip transportation from San José, lunch and entrance fees).A 90
minute drive to the west is Carara Biological Reserve, "Place
of the Crocodiles", a protected transition forest that is home
to an unbelievable diversity of plants and animals. Carara is also
considered a sanctuary of the rare and beautiful Scarlet Macaw.
Highly recommended! We begin with a delicious breakfast and a comfortable ride to the pacific town of Tarcoles.
