Sportfishing in the waters off
Quepos & Manuel Antonio

Sail fishing in Costa Rica is outstanding. Sails are most abundant throughout the year, however during the months of late December through May you should expect to see many free jumpers and excessive amounts of fish. Sailfish, like Marlin are taken year round with usually about 5 to 15 fish a day.

The calm waters off Costa Rica's Pacific coast have long been known to produce some of the world's most spectacular sail fishing. Here the acrobatic sailfish are the primary target, but mighty blue and black marlin, colorful dorado, some striped marlin, wahoo, and yellow fin tuna that range in size from small footballs to 200 lbs.-plus giants often join them. Closer to shore, the awesome roosterfish lurks around submerged rocks; ready to pounce on baits and lures.

Quepos has the distinction of having the largest sport fishing fleet in the country as well as calm seas for most of the year. To have 10 shots at a sailfish in one days' fishing is common, 20 not unheard of and there have been many days when more than 30 fished were raised. The port of Quepos is located on the west coast of the country, about a 3 1/2 hour drive from the capital of San Jose and within a stone's throw of Manuel Antonio National Park, the most popular Park in Costa Rica. The park is famous for its beautiful beaches and abundance of wildlife.

The fishing grounds off Quepos are famous for the numbers of sailfish, but there is also a good chance to hook into a big marlin. These cobalt waters are home to huge schools dolphin, (locally known as dorado), as well as several species of tuna and wahoo. The inshore fishing offers an opportunity to tangle with roosterfish, cubera snapper and broomtail grouper. The current world record snook at 57 pounds 12 ounces was taken at the mouth of the Rio Naranjo by a boat fishing out of Quepos.
