Because fishermen deserve not only excellent fishing but also excellent accommodations and service, Ocotal Beach Resort was conceived in 1978 to provide an alternative to the traditional rustic sportfishing facilities available in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica. Ocotal has taken care to devote equal concern to its boats, fishing and crews as it does to how our fishermen spend their non-fishing hours.
Ocotal is proud of its new outstanding fleet of 32 to 42 ft. sportfishing boats operated by Arco del Pacífico.
The fishing day starts at 6:15 a.m. with breakfast on the picturesque terrace overlooking the Gulf of Papagayo. Boats are ready to depart at 7:00 a.m. The eight hour day generally includes a one hour run time and 6 hours cf fishing.
These boats all have a flying bridge, shaded top, fighting chair head, outriggers, downriggers and carry an array of 20 to 80 pound Penn. International trolling rods and reels and spin tackle.
With Costa Rica´s most experienced pacific coast skippers, all crews are both professional and accommodating, loaded with a life time of local fishing knowledge, but eager and willing to try new different techniques. All captains have knowledge of English specially with regards to their trade.
Ocotal believes strongly in the preservation of our fishing resources and encourages all bill fish and non-eating fish to be realized. Our crews are extremely knowledgeable and experienced in how to correctly release fish to insure the highest probability of survival. We ask the cooperation and participation of our fishing guests to aid our efforts to preserve these magnificent marine creatures.
The fertile fishing grounds of the Gulf of Papagayo provides year round action for approximately 25 varieties of sportfish. Although most famous for its sailfishing from April through September, these same waters produce great marling catches almost every month of the year.
During peak months, Ocotal boats regularly raise 10 to 20 sailfish each day. But sails are caught year round averaging 1 to 3 sails raised per day from October through March.
Boat crews are experienced to assist light tackle and fly fishermen challenge these 100 pound plus fish.
The Gulf of Papagayo´s marlin fishing is recognized as some of the finest in the world. Black marlin are caught all months of the year with the best chances from May through August. For blue marlin, ones again our waters are considered some of the finest in the world. Seen year round most catches are made during December, January, February, March and April.
The rare striped marlin is also occasionally caught in our waters.
Apart from billfish, probably the most sought after prey for the sport fishermen is the roosterfish. More trophy-size rooster are taken from waters around Ocotal than any place in the world. Generally taken on live bait, 40 to 60 pound roosters can be taken with amazing certainty year round. Other popular sportfish include Dogtooth Snapper, Wahoo, Dorado and Yellow Fin Tuna.
The accommodations at Ocotal are spacious and comfortable; each of our rooms and suites has either 2 queen or 1 King size bed. All rooms are air-conditioned furnished with overhead fans, private ocean view terrace, color satellite T.V. and international telephone. Ocotal was totally renovated and re furnished in 1999.
